South Island Schools Champs - Christchurch 13th June '08

On Friday the 13th of June 2008, the Dunedin UWH Club sent up a Senior Open's composite team to enter the SI Schools UWH Championships. The team consisted of Kelvin Milne as the manager, Bruce Smallfield as the coach, David Cassie (an under 19's NZ Rep / yr 13) as captain, Jenny Milne (yr 12) as vice captain and Tessa Braid (yr 11), Erin Cassie (yr 11), Danni Steele (yr 12), Helen Milne (yr 12), Peter Smallfield (yr 12), Adam Spencer (yr 12) and Mitch Hislop (the only junior yr 9).

Saturday started at 6 am and we were at the QEII swimming pool around 7:00-7:15. Our games were at 8:15, 9:55, 11:35, 12:50, 2:55, and the seeds at 5:00 and 6:15.

We won all of the games except for the last one (against Invercargil) when the score was 2:1 (us winning) but in the last 30 seconds they scored another goal and we entered Sudden Death. The team played wonderfully but the effect of the long day at the pool getting in and out of the water took its toll and Invercargil scored the winning goal.

Invercargil played played brilliantly and hopefully we will be able to visit them and have a game before they go and represent the South Island in NZ's Senior Open Schools Championship. Everyone on the team tried their hardest and played their best, I am very thankful to have been on such a wonderful team. - Helen Milne

South Island Champs - Christchurch 17th May '08

The 2008 South Island Champs were played in Christchurch's QEII pool on Saturday 17th May. Teams were fielded by Dunedin, QEII, Pegasus and Nelson. Sadly Invercargill were not represented.

Dunedin entered four teams: two teams in the 4 team 'A' grade competition, Speight's Gold and Speight's Distinction; one team (The Highlanders) in the 5 team 'B' competition and the unimaginatively named Dunedin C in the 6(!) team 'C' grade competition. 'A' and 'B' grade played a double round-robin and finals format and the 'C' grade played a single round-robin and finals. Games were 20 minutes long.

Dunedin teams placed thus:
